The Internet Association Statement on FTC Chairman Ramirez

APPLAUDS PRESIDENT’S DESIGNATION FOR RAMIREZ TO LEAD THE FTC

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, The Internet Association, the unified voice of the Internet economy, representing the interests Airbnb, Amazon.com, AOL, ebay, Expedia, Facebook, Google, IAC, LinkedIn, Monster Worldwide, Rackspace, salesforce.com, TripAdvisor, Yahoo!, and Zynga, issued the following statement applauding President Obama’s appointment of Commissioner Edith Ramirez to Chairman at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC):

“The Internet Association welcomes the President’s decision to designate Chairman Edith Ramirez to lead the FTC. As a Commissioner, she has shown a clear commitment to protecting consumers while recognizing the need for Internet companies to innovate in a rapidly-evolving industry.

“We look forward to working with her to promote the Commission’s mission to protect consumers. For example, the FTC recently reported that identity theft was the top consumer complaint in 2012, and we will collaborate with the Commission on the data security threats that may perpetuate this problem. Also, we commend the FTC for making the patent troll problem a priority, and believe that Chairman Ramirez’s expertise in this area will allow the Commission to continue its important leadership in this area.

“We also thank outgoing Chairman Liebowitz for his leadership as the FTC, and wish him well in his future endeavors.”
