IA Statement on E-Commerce Discussions at the 11th WTO Ministerial Conference

Internet Association Director, Trade & International Policy Ari Giovenco issued the following statement on e-commerce discussions at the 11th WTO Ministerial Conference:

“The internet industry applauds the joint statement by 70 like-minded WTO members on initiating exploratory work on global e-commerce rules. Breaking down barriers to e-commerce has the potential to provide vast opportunities for American small businesses and exporters who use the internet to reach foreign customers. We look forward to working with governments on defining the substance of talks. The U.S. is home to the world’s leading internet companies and it is our hope USTR takes a key leadership role in these discussions. In addition, we congratulate WTO members for extending the long-standing practice of prohibiting customs duties on electronic transmissions”
