March Jobs Report Shows Online Jobs Posting Up After Last Month’s Drop, But Still Down By Half Over Last 12 Months

Washington, DC – Internet Association (IA) today released the March IA Industry Indicators: Jobs (3i Jobs) report, which presents monthly insights on the U.S. job market using data from national and internet-based resources. The report tracks trends in the traditional and freelance job markets and presents unique information on hiring, openings, and online income by combining original IA analysis with data from IA member companies including Thumbtack and Indeed.
“The March 3i report indicates that online full-time job postings are beginning to increase again following their precipitous drop in January,” said IA Chief Economist Christopher Hooton. “We’ll be keeping a careful eye on how the economic downturn and health conditions impact the jobs report next month.”
Key findings from the report include:
- Online full-time (FT) postings saw an increase of 10.5 percent in February 2020, but were still down 56 percent over the year. Part-time postings were up 28.9 percent year-over-year and 7.7 percent month-over-month.
- Average income earned using the internet increased $168 in February 2020, after seeing a deep drop over the holiday season in January 2020. Applications were down 1.4 percent, hirings were down 0.9 percent, and use of the internet to earn income was down 4.6 percent.
- The three top postings for full-time positions online in February were customer service representative, retail sales associate, and administrative assistant.
