October Online Jobs Report Shows Big Jump In Online Job Postings

“The explosive growth in online job postings over the past year shows how important the internet is to the modern jobs market.”

Christopher Hooton, IA Chief Economist

Washington, DC – Internet Association (IA) today released the October IA Industry Indicators: Jobs (3i Jobs) report, which presents monthly insights on the U.S. job market using data from national and internet-based resources. The report tracks trends in the traditional and freelance job markets and presents unique information on hiring, openings, and online income by combining original IA analysis with data from IA member companies including Thumbtack and Indeed.

“The explosive growth in online job postings over the past year shows how important the internet is to the modern jobs market,” said IA Chief Economist Christopher Hooton. “Not only are companies posting more full- and part-time jobs online every year, but Americans are also searching for – and finding jobs – online at increasing rates.”

Key findings from the report include:

  • Online full-time job postings in September soared nearly 130 percent compared to last year. Postings were up 129.7 percent year over year and 3.1 percent month over month.
  • Traditional job searches, applications, and hirings through the internet swung up in September 2019, rebounding after their first recorded decline in August. Job searches were up 1.7 percent, applications were up 0.6 percent, and hirings were up 1.3 percent.
  • The three top postings for full-time positions online in September were customer service representative, retail sales associate, and administrative assistant. The three top postings for part-time positions online in September were retail sales associate, customer service representative, and administrative assistant.
