Statement On Chairman Pallone And Ranking Member Walden’s Letter To USTR On August 6

Washington, DC – Internet Association President & CEO Michael Beckerman released the following statement on the letter to Office Of The United States Trade Representative (USTR) sent by Chairman Frank Pallone (D-NJ) and Ranking Member Greg Walden (R-OR) on August 6:

“USMCA’s digital chapter – including its intermediary liability provisions – represent a victory for the entire American economy. The intermediary liability provisions in USMCA would help businesses of all sizes and in every industry grow, export, and reach the 95 percent of consumers outside of the U.S. Removing any of the important provisions from USMCA’s digital chapter would impact the countless small businesses and entrepreneurs that use online platforms to export and advertise their businesses.

“Online user reviews and ratings – which are made possible by a longstanding U.S. law, CDA 230 – are often the best way for small sellers everywhere in America to reach new markets. CDA 230 is also the law that allows platforms to moderate content that no reasonable person would want online.”
