Statement On The ECJ’s Decision in Schrems II
Washington, DC – IA Director, Trade Policy Jordan Haas issued the following statement on the European Court of Justice’s decision in Data Protection Commissioner v Facebook Ireland, Maximillian Schrems (Schrems II), that invalidated the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield program:
“Digital companies remain committed to ensuring that information and data continue to flow freely across the Atlantic Ocean. Transatlantic data flows benefit businesses of all sizes and support millions of American jobs. It is important that as Europe looks to implement this ruling, there is a clear transition period put into place to allow time to get back to the negotiating table. A transition period is essential to ensure that the over 5,000 small companies on both sides of the Atlantic that rely on the Privacy Shield program can continue to leverage this privacy-protective mechanism for inter-company data transfers. IA encourages both the EU and U.S. governments to start negotiations as quickly as possible.”
