Statement On The Passage of Utah’s Electronic Free Speech Amendments Bill

Washington, DC – Internet Association’s Senior Vice President of State Government Affairs Robert Callahan released the following statement urging Governor Cox to veto Utah’s Electronic Free Speech Amendments Bill (SB 228):

“By restricting internet companies’ ability to moderate harmful content, SB 228 would leave Utah citizens uniquely exposed to a wide variety of tangible harms, like financial fraud and online harassment. This bill also knowingly runs afoul of both federal law and First Amendment rights, not to mention Utah’s own state constitution. Utah would be the first state in the country to enact such a flawed measure, seriously threatening Utah’s status as a premier technology hub.  We strongly encourage Governor Cox to veto SB 228.”
