Statement On U.S.-Mexico Announced Preliminary Agreement

Washington, DC — Internet Association Director of Trade and International Policy Jordan Haas issued the following statement in response to the announced U.S.-Mexico two-way trade understanding:

“The internet industry is optimistic about the potential of a new NAFTA that will, for the first time, recognize the internet as an important U.S. export that contributes to a significant trade surplus. It’s encouraging that reports indicate the agreement has a strong e-commerce chapter, but the internet industry calls on USTR to include all elements of digital trade in any new agreement. An innovation-friendly intellectual property framework that reflects the principles enshrined in U.S. law should be part of the new trade deal. We look forward to Canada rejoining the talks and bringing a modernized NAFTA across the finish line.”
