Each year International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8. Thousands of events occur to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women.
This year’s theme is “Make It Happen,” and the Internet Association has teamed up with Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook COO and author of bestselling Lean In, to share a message on the importance of fostering women in STEM careers. Women as a percentage of the computer science field are plummeting, with women earning only 13% of CS degrees today. Because careers in tech pay better and give workers greater flexibility, Sandberg uses this video and her body of work as a call to action for the tech industry to encourage young women to enter the field. “If America is going to continue to lead the world in innovation, we need to take advantage of the full talents of the population,” says Sandberg.
